I was just doing my job is all. Felt bad for the honest ones though. Alot of people were hungry cause there homes were destroyed and stores were shut down. I had to guard the front doors because we discovered a bunch of looters taking advantage of the situation. People were robbing microwaves, clothes, you name it, but there were honest to God good people just trying to eat. It was sad. At one point we allowed people in and they were monitored very closely. This was so they could eat. Human life is our top priority in these cases. We dealt with the looters later. At least, to the best of our ability…so many people, kinda hard to watch everyone.
Better days are ahead though.

Gender: Male

It destroyed everything I worked my entire life for…All that remains is me and my roosters. Thank the Lord that my wife Peggy is not here to see this, God rest her gentle soul. This would have crushed her.
I’m forced to stay by my brother in laws house. Me and him never got along too much but due to the circumstance, there’s no choice. I hope that some kind of salvation comes. God is good but he reminds you to live your life right. Every now and again, he gives you a taste of his wrath.
Alot of good people are hurt by this. At least I have a place to stay. The thing that upsets me the most I would say is my dog Lucky. He’s gone. I found him underneath a few pieces of ply wood about one hundred yards North of what used to be my house. He was my best friend.
Well, I guess I have to rebuild, make the best of what I got. If I quit now, it all won’t make sense. I have to keep on keeping. It’s what my mother used to say…keep on keeping…

Character: JADE
Description: Jade tells the story of how blessed she feels her her family is, despite the tragic events.
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Oh we were fleeing to get out. Thank God we did because I was pregnant with my daughter Susanne. It was a miracle, once we crossed the border, I went into labor, right there in the car. I ended up giving birth to my daughter in the back of my minivan! We had emergency help arrive. My brother in law is a doctor.
That was a miracle that my family was spared but a tragedy that our belongings are gone. The saddest thing was the baby furniture. We just finished purchasing the cutest baby furniture with all these Walt Disney characters. Really expensive too and we don’t come from money. All of it washed away, just like that.
The most difficult thing as you can imagine is rebuilding our livelihood. What a challenge it has been. We will be alright but it’s a long road ahead.
