“Genius” (drama) 2 minutes

Monologue Description: “Genius” is about not judging a book by it’s cover. It’s about not criticizing people and looking down on people, who have not gone to college.

Character Description: Jacob is an extremely brilliant young man, who comes from the streets of Detroit. He is pursuing a music career and talks to his friends about an issue regarding education that has been bothering him.

JACOB:

You know what makes me laugh? It’s when I see people who have gone to great colleges, thinking they are God’s gift to being braniacs. I hate when college people look down upon people who have not gone to college. It’s like they look upon people without diplomas as if they are ignorant because they are not educated. Well, I have news for you college dwellers. I can only speak for myself on this mind you. But I didn’t go to college. Not because I couldn’t go, but because I chose not to go. I already knew what I needed to pursue and didn’t want to waste my time learning crap I was never going to use.

The funny thing is that I have taken three I.Q. tests and my score is WAY passed the genius level. My SAT score was PERFECT. I don’t talk about this because I am not a bragger. I think people that talk about how great they are, are the real fools. Or those people who are good at talking about how intelligent they are indirectly, are the real fools. The smartest people walking this planet are the ones who don’t have to show it verbally but do so by action to help make this world better.

You see, I’m like the guy in that Matt Damon movie, GOOD WILL HUNTING. I’m someone who comes from a tough neighborhood and I may talk funny but I’m a fucking genius. You know what? I don’t even care about that stuff. It means nothing to me. Honestly. I have nothing to prove and all I want to do in my life is make a difference. Make a difference for the right reasons. I’m going to leave a BIG mark on this world, before I leave it for the better of humanity. That’s what I’m living my life for. Not for a piece of paper that says I am educated. Henry Ford was once put on trial for being a man who was not educated. Imagine that? Henry Ford, the man who invented and built the first car. In the trial they said that he was not an educated man, since he dropped out of school at a very young age. Anyway, the lawyer asked Mr. Ford questions that he had no answers to. This was proving to the public that Mr. Henry Ford was not a man of education. But finally, Henry Ford, got flustered and looked at the lawyer square in the eye and said, Sir, why would I have to waste my time studying these facts when I can simply hire an expert in the field, who can answer it for me. Mr. Fords answer blew away the lawyer because only a man of education, would be smart enough to do that.

That’s my point. Get off your high horse if you have been treating people who have not gone to college unfairly. It isn’t right. And be careful because maybe one day you will get a kick in your ass from someone like me, who will make you out to be the fool you truly are.

You should never judge a book by its cover.

One more thing, I would never say don’t go to school either. I believe that school is important, although I feel our educational system is poor. BUT, there are certain fields that need college and that is terrific. My only point is that people who have not gone to college, should not be looked at as unintelligent individuals. Society has a tendency to do that and I laugh because it shows where the real intelligence exists.
