Monologue Description: “All Bets Are Off” is about a fall from grace.
Character Description: In this monologue, Rena, a woman in her fifties, talks to herself about her life.
RENA:
That’s it…that was my last.
(takes a swig from her alcohol from a Styrofoam cup)
(she takes a deep drag of her cigarette. Her hand wobbles a bit)
(laughs to herself and shakes her head)
Oh God, I fucked up big didn’t I? HA HA! Who is hear to hear me? HA HA HA! They say your a product from the environment from which you came. Don’t know how true that is but, it sure as hell feels like it could be true.
Dag!
Dag! Dag! Dag!
My whole fucking life for this shit and look what I’ve got. LOOK WHAT I’VE GOT! NOTHING. I got nothing but regret and bad memories and guilt and depression and illness and oh hell!!!
(she throws her drink)
To hell with all of ya! I’m through. Gonna change my life. All bets are off. I’m done.
(beat)
(chuckles to herself)
Boy oh boy…I…I thought I was gonna be rich someday. You know, it’s more than that. It’s more than that really. When I was just a pretty little girl, you know, before I got all messed up. I would visit my grandfather’s ranch up in the hills. We would go out right after lunchtime and we’d feed the horses. These powerful, majestic creatures. My grandpa and me, we had a good thing going for awhile, till one day, one day he caught a heart attack…killed him on the spot. We was brushing big old RADIO, we called this big golden horse Radio cause everytime we turned on the radio, he’d start acting like he was dancing. HA HA! Craziest thing I ever saw….yeah…always felt a special connection to Radio.
My grandfather dropped dead and it was all down hill from there. I never visited the ranch ever again. My father, he sold off all the land and horses. Eh…what’s the use. Why think back?
Where does it get ya?
..gonna change my life…
(she goes and picks her Styrofoam cup back up and walks off)
