Monologue Description: “Mexican Dad” is about how a father is a father, no matter what culture you are from.
Character Description: In this monologue, Carlos talks to his friend, an American, about the truck toy he found for his son.
CARLOS:
I come to this country, you know. I work this job, try to make a living for my family. Not much money but enough for my wife and son to eat.
Today, today I found a truck. A black hummer truck. You wanna see? Okay.
(He pulls out a black hummer truck toy from behind a refrigerator)
You see? FREE. For my son. I saw a man in a suit over on Park Avenue placing the truck by the trash. It was early in the morning and there wasn’t many people around. I went over to the truck and I looked it over. It had some marks on it, it looked used but if I polished it up a bit, I could make it look new again, for my son.
But then the same man in the suit came back outside and yelled at me to leave the truck alone but then I explained to him that I wanted to take it, if it was garbage for my son as a toy. I saw that the man became nice to me and said that I could take it. He said that he didn’t throw out the remote control. He told me that it was a remote control truck and it still worked. All I needed was to buy batteries.
The suit man told me that his son grew out of the toy. This I did not understand. What does this mean, “grew out”. I don’t know this.
But he was nice and I kept nodding my head. I’m going to polish this truck up and make it look new for my son. He is going to be happy. I am excited to do this for him and I already told my wife. She is excited to see the truck too.
Maybe one day I can drive around in a real hummer truck. Ha Ha Ha.
