Monologue Description: “Brooklyn Bridge Collapses!” is about just that, the possibility of this historical bridge, coming to an end.

Character Description: In this monologue, The Reporter suffers an anxiety attack because of his own personal feelings regarding the collapse of The Brooklyn Bridge.

REPORTER:

This just in, The Brooklyn Bridge has collapsed moments ago, our choppers are on the scene.  Here are the first video images of this tragic event.  We turn the cameras to Jim McDonald, who is right there now, (clears his throat) talking to witnesses…Jim?

(off the air)

Kathy, Kathy…are we off the air?  I can’t…

(sighs)

I am feeling anxiety…my breathing…I am having difficulty breathing…I think I need some water…please, something…I just can’t believe…I can’t believe it.

How can we?  Another tragedy like this…my God…what have we done?  Innocent…innocent people…

(sighs)

We should have known.  We write the news!  We should have done something more than…  We…

Thank you for the water.

(drinks from a water bottle)

That bridge was poor.  It was in terrible condition…we knew this.  What have we done?  We knew this!!!

The country is falling apart Kathy…this is devastating!

We are going back?

(back on air)

(looks into the camera)

Okay, well, Hi Jim, do…did, we are live and…and, and….Oh hell.

(standing up from his chair)

How can this be?!  LOOK WHAT HAS HAPPENED?  Where was the government funding for this?  We had all the tell tale signs, didn’t we?  And now I’m expected to report this like we didn’t know?  I’m supposed to tell our country about this sickening story when we COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS!!!

WE COULD HAVE AVOIDED THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(the reporter collapses to the floor)
