“Are You Gay?” (drama) 1 Minute

Monologue Description: “Are You Gay?” is about a father wanting to know his sons sexual preference.

Character Description: In this monologue, Vasquez confronts his son about being gay.  Vasquez is a hard edged military man who speaks with a heavy Spanish-American accent.  He is a very domineering figure.  A man of great respect and power and he knows it.  Keep in mind that he questions his son not in privacy but in front of his friends. (father’s friends)  Vasquez likes to drink and this monologue takes place in the backyard of his home.

VASQUEZ:

What do you think you are?  Huh?  you think your shit don’t stink?  You think, eh, the way you prounce around here, it is okay?  Come on, tell me, do you?  Do you–really?  What kind of man walks around here with both his nose and his ass in the air?  You make your father wonder things about you.  Not good things.

Where are you going?!  STAY!!! 

(beat)

You STAY when your father speaks to you.

(pause)

(lights a smoke and grins)

You take after your Grandfather…He was a fag.  It’s true.  He was a closet homo–your Grandfather, yes.  He was as gay as the sun rises every morning but he still had a family but–HE WAS LIVING A LIE.

Do you want to live a lie too, like your Grandfather?  Do you want to be a faggot like he was, your Grandfather??  Tell me.  Tell me now!  Are you?!
