Monologue Description: “My Greatest Trophy” is about dealing with the loss of a loved one in a positive manner.
Character Description: In this monologue, TINA talks about her mother to her mother’s friend Betsy. Tina is a middle aged woman with a family of her own and she now reflects in the lobby of the funeral home where her mother rests, about how wonderful a human being her mom really was. She smokes a cigarette while she talks.
TINA:
I’m a simple woman, never really had much in my life growing up. At Christmas I would get one toy. But it was the greatest toy in the world…God knows how many hours my mother had to work to get me that one toy.
(she smiles warmly)
With all that I have now, which I greatly appreciate, I can live without if need be. I’m not a materialistic person, never was.
All the money in the world can’t bring back my mother, no cars, no house, no jewelry and on and on. My mother was always my greatest trophy, a real woman, a woman that no other woman can ever compare too, including myself. I can only live my life hoping to be half the woman she was.
Such an unselfish, caring, loving woman. When it came to her family she would do whatever it took. And trust me, she did….she certainly did…
(beat)
If it wasn’t for her, I woudn’t be a good person. She taught me morals and respect and honesty, loyalty, love, compassion and integrity. Words that get tossed around today like they don’t exist. People hear them but they never stop to consider their truest meaning. Instead, most people will criticize those words or laugh it off but they never really think about there significance.
It’s what I try to instill in my own children. I want my kids to be good people. To not pass cruel judgement on others but instead try to understand. What is life without this comprehension? How are we to grow as individuals without it?
My mother’s passing is an inspiration to me because it is her greatest reminder for what she stood for in life. God Bless her soul.
