“Step Down” (drama) 1 Minute

Monologue Description: Step Down” is about friendship vs. suicide.

Character Description: In this monologue,  Ashton talks to one of his closest friends about not committing suicide.  His friend Roger has called him on his cellphone with suicidal ramblings.  Ashton has gone to the roof of his friend’s building where Roger plans to jump.  The following monologue takes place while Roger stands on the ledge.

ASHTON:

Roger, don’t do this…please don’t do this.  Your life is worth living.  If you jump you are going to make alot of people unhappy.  Come on, think about your family, think about your friends Roger.  Your life means something.

Look, I promise you, if you get down off that ledge, we will go for help together.  We can go to a specialist and talk things out. 

(Roger: “What the fuck do you know?!”)

Please, Roger, shouting is not the answer my friend.  Come on.  Hey, remember when we were teenagers and you witnessed my father giving me a beating after school because I failed my math test?  Do you remember that? 

I remember you hid behind the tree in the front yard until my father went back into the house.  I was crying on the steps and then you came over to me.  Remember what you told me?  You said, “Hey, my father beats me too, do you want half my snickers bar?”

(they both share a chuckle)

Remember that?  It was the beginning of becoming best friends.  You helped me get past that shit in my life and I did for you as well.  We became brothers.  Listen Roger, if we can get past those tough days, I know we can get past this, TOGETHER.

I am your best friend, your brother.  I am here for you man.  You are not alone.  I know you’ve been going through some hard shit lately but trust me, everything will work itself out.  Jumping off thisstupid ledge is not the answer bro.  You’re better than that and you respect yourself too much to end your life that way.  That’s not the Roger I’ve come to admire.

Come on, step down from there.  Let’s go grab a beer over at Smitty’s Pub, on me.  What do you say?  Huh?  Let’s go have some laughs.
