Monologue Description: “3, 104, 389, 444″ is a drama about appreciating the value of life.
Character Description: In this monologue, Saul talks to his friend about the possibility of whether or not it would be better to know when EXACTLY you were going to die. Saul is your average Joe, a blue collar worker, he wears jeans and a t-shirt and sits on his couch holding a football. His friend sits on the couch across from him. They toss the football back and forth. Just a couple of guys, talking about their points of view on life.
SAUL:
I think we’re all given a number before we’re born. Each one of us, before we’re manufactured, is given our own unique expiration number. We just don’t know what that number is.
How many heart beats do each of us have before we go?
I remember watching an episode from the television show, ALF. The character Alf is designed to know when he’s gonna die, on what day or something. I always thought that wierd. For some reason, it always stuck out in my mind. I sometimes catch myself wondering, what if I knew when I was going to die, on what day and what time? Would I rather know or not know?
Would it be scarier to know when we will come to pass or is it better not to know when our heart beat expires? Maybe we are meant not to know for a reason. Maybe to help us appreciate each day we are alive because we will never know exactly when it will be our very last.
What about you? Would you want to know your number?
