Monologue Description: “DARK CLOUDED HAND” is a drama about breaking through obstacles.
Character Description: In this monologue, Orton, a middle-aged farmer, who has spent all of his life tending to the loving care of his family’s farm, has been met with a wealthy real estate tycoon, who is trying to rob Orton of his family’s legacy. This wealthy landowner has been doing everything possible to legally and illegally take the prosperous farm from Orton. This scene is Orton speaking out against this wealthy man.
ORTON TANNER:
You want to take me down? You want to come here, with your crooked smile, slick demeanor and briefcase full of money, making threatening offers? Telling me what I should do, WITH MY LAND?! Denouncing me of my birthright, my heritage, my family’s legacy?! Well, I got news for you sir, when a pig turns into a rooster, will you ever take this land from my blood.
(beat)
(softly) Why do men like you exist?
(beat)
(calmly) Since my Great-Great Granddaddy was alive, he worked this land with a wheel barrel and a strong back, filled with fierce determination, passion and will power that’s been handed down from one Tanner to the next Tanner, with the same love of the work…love of the vision. Mr. Pierce, without this farm—you take this farm away from my family, from my sons—my children—you are going to destroy—sir, if you can only understand, what you are doing to us…this is everything.
(stronger) Mr. Pierce, please try to comprehend what I speak to you. I was never a man who was good with putting my thoughts and heart into words…perhaps that may be my shortcoming here today with you but, look into my eyes…
(pause)
Understand this Mr. Pierce…I will not permit you or anyone else, to ruin—If that be the case sir, than I will lay the dark clouded hand upon myself first, before I allow you to do so. I will see to it that neither of us benefit.
…Mr. Pierce…please note this…if I must, I will bring great harm upon you. Now, I don’t—I am not a threatening type of man…in fact, it makes me quiver, as I am a religious man but sir, as sure as my last name is Tanner and as sure as you try to rob my two boys of what is rightfully theirs…I will bring hell upon your doorstep!
…I will—

Monologue Description: “THOSE RAINY NIGHTS” is about lost love.
Character Description: In this monologue, Donny, talks to himself as he puffs his cigar, alone in his apartment…listening to the rain outside his window.
DONNY:
[he gazes out his window as he sits on a stool, smoking his cigar by himself]
[he talks to himself]
You get used to the loneliness…you get to a point where you like being alone. You somehow, take comfort in it…At first, you know, the first couple of months…it was difficult. You learn to adjust and part of you simply wants to cave in.
The hardest nights, are those rainy nights…the nights when I would hold her…we both loved those rainy nights…[he smiles] We both took comfort—I would hold her…I would wrap my arm around her, place my leg over her tiny thighs and pull her into me…she loved when I would do that..haha…she loved when I would gently take her and pull her into my chest…she loved the comfort and so did I…so did I…we were the perfect fit…it was if our bodies were designed by GOD, to lock into one another…perfection by design…it was beautiful…so, so beautiful…those rainy nights…
Sometimes when it rains late at night…I think about her…I try not to, but at times the loneliness tricks you…just when you think being alone is your friend, it grabs you and shakes you awake from your fantasy, making you realize that she’s not gone, she hasn’t left you…I don’t think she ever will…perhaps part of me doesn’t want her too.
I still love her…I do. I don’t care how much pride you have or how fucking strong you are…when you really love somebody, when that person is taken away from you…it haunts you…that’s the truth, that’s the truth…
I smoke these cigars since…I used to puff on ‘em once in awhile but now, I’m a regular…keeps me calm in life…I could understand now why she smoked…haha…I wish I understood then what I understand now…but that’s the irony of life, isn’t it?
Talking to myself like a babbling idiot…[sighs] Eh, she knows…those rainy nights…

Monologue Description: “NOT TO WORRY” is a drama that tells the story of seeing an accident.
Character Description: In this monologue, Walter is an elderly man who witnessed a little boy fall off a swing. He shares his story with his wife Elyse.
WALTER:
…I don’t feel well Elyse…[sighs heavily with a slight groan] I don’t know what happened. I was walking along the park…I was right about to reach the set of swings, when all of a sudden, I witnessed one of the most horrifying things. A young boy, must have been four or five years old—he was swinging, pretty high on the swing. There was nobody else around supervising him and—at first, I was surprised at how high this young man was going—amazed even—like an old pro.
Than fear struck me. [he grabs his stomach] I worried that this child was going to fall and—just as I thought that, this little boy went backward, off of the swing and he fell backwards…hitting his head, the back of his head…off the concrete ground.
I was beside myself. There was sort of like a popping noise, like something just popped. I can’t think of a better word for it…just a POP! And the child layed there, on the ground, not even moving. My nerves, my whole body, I felt it in my arms, my chest, my neck—I was breathing heavy!
There was a fence between me and the boy and I at first tried to climb over it. I was thinking straight. I just wanted to get to the boy. I saw an opening—
[calming himself down from getting emotionally excited]
I’m sorry..I just need a second dear…[he breathes in deeply, he exhales heavily, he wipes a tear from his eye with his handkerchief, he clears his throat, he regains his strength to continue his story]
[softly] I found an opening in the fence to make it to the other side, where the boy was and I went for it. I ran as best I could to get there and, as I, as I came to him, I notices blood around his head…it seemed to be coming out from his ear. Yeah…[he sighs]
I was about to kneel down when I heard this terrible terrible terrible scream from the distance…A woman…it was the mother. She was waving her arms sporadically and racing over to where I was. It was her son…the little boy was her son who happened to go missing for fifteen minutes before he was found—found at the bottom of my feet and…
[he cries]
Oh dear, it was painful to see this woman, this mother kneel down beside her son, who was unconscious and—an ambulance came within five minutes. I was surprised. When they brought the boy into the ambulance, his eyes opened, which was a good sign thank God. I asked if they thought he would be okay and one of the, you know, the man, the nurse there, he assured me that it, that the boy was in good hands and that he should be fine…not to worry.
