Monologue Description: “GunSmoke” is a drama about appreciating life.

Character Description: In this monologue,  Matty recounts a story of the first and only time she used the phrase GUNSMOKE, which is a secret word she and her partner made up, if they ever noticed “trouble”.  Matty is a nickname for Matilda.  Matilda is a masculine type of woman.  One would take her for a lesbian but she is actually attracted to men.  She walks tall, shoulders wide and head up.

MATTY:

We were walking up towards the car.  It was a white sedan.  Ray was up on the driver’s side and I was coming up on the passenger side.  I must have gotten about seven feet from the passenger’s side window when I noticed a gun being aimed from inside the car, out towards Ray.  So I calmly said the phrase, “GUNSMOKE”.  And Ray jumped back just as the guy in the car fired his gun.  Bullets just missed Ray.  I, in turn shot the guy square in the neck and he stopped shooting instantly.  But then the driver hit the gas and sped off.

Ray and I ran back to our car and we were in pursuit of the white sedan, heading east on Fort Walk Road.  Took us about a good mile before we caught back up to ‘em.  But he was a crazy sucker.  A real son of a gun.  Slippery one, he–was–a–slippery one.  But we got ‘em…we sure did…right after we crossed, BridgeView Drive.  We spun him ’round right into the Clarkson Pond.

Son of a bitch, STILL, jumped out of the car and began swimming across the pond.  By now we had back up arriving and we also had the dogs.  So this punk wasn’t going very far.  Turns out he gets a cramp halfway across the pond and begins drowning.  By the time any of us who swam out to him, reached him, he was already dead.

We tried and tried to bring him back but, nothin’ we did brought him back.  The bastard was dead.  We found out later, after they did a blood test, that he was heavily intoxicated with an assortment of all kinds of deadly drugs….it may even look like he was intending on dying that night. So, in a way, we almost stopped him from achieving his purpose.  But the truth be told, deep down, he didn’t want to die because while he was drowning, he kept screaming, ” HELP! HELP! HELP!”, a bunch of times before he was silent.

Death’s silence, ain’t nothin’ like it.  As if you can see the spirit that was in the body, LEAVE.  A spiritual but eerie feeling overcomes you, when you know that somebody has just died before your very eyes.  You almost have to check yourself to make sure you are alive.  You realize how lucky you are to still be breathing.  You’re thanking God for not being the guy floating dead in the center of the pond.
