Monologue Description: “CLAY PIGEON” is a drama written by CHRISTIAN ORTEGA
Character Description: In this monologue, Justin talks to his girlfriend about how he accidentally shot a Sparrow.
JUSTIN:
I don’t know if it was my fault. Yes, I fired the weapon. But still, it was an accident. It happened..It happened in a matter of three seconds…
I positioned the rifle against my shoulder, as I had been for the last ten minutes. I said “Pull”, the thing went up, I followed it, and just as I pulled the trigger, this small black speck appeared, and then fell out of my view.
I don’t think I would’ve seen it if I hadn’t pulled the trigger. That’s how fast it was moving—not fast enough.
Before firing my second shot I hesitated. It’s like I knew what had happened but I didn’t want to believe it. I didn’t want to acknowledge it. I mean give me a break, the chances…
In a flash I said “No,impossible.” And I lifted the rifle to fire my second shot at the clay pigeon which was still floating along, but Jim called out to hold on and I knew it was true. He said “I think you–shot a bird”.
I felt embarrassed, not only because I knew the bird was going to die, but because I would have ignored it. If no one said anything, I wouldn’t have said anything.
We walked into the grass about twenty five feet and there it was.
It was a small bird, about the size of my hand. A Sparrow someone said. It’s feathers were brown and white. It was beautiful. Bob poked it with a stick, which was pointless because anyone could see by it’s still, pale eyes that it was dead. Then he grabbed it by it’s wing and held it in the air, exposing it’s wound to me. He made some joke but…I didn’t laugh.
