Monologue Description: “HATRED AND ENVY” is about making a choice by taking on a deal. Maxwell makes a sexual offer to Alexandra in order to then solve “her problem”.

Character Description: In this monologue, Maxwell is a middle-aged man. He wears a tuxedo and speaks with an English accent. He is of upper class descent and carries himself with distinction. He speaks to a woman named Alexandra, who was caught being intimate with a man in the master bedroom of Maxwell’s mansion. Another woman, named Heather, has also witnessed the sexual scenario and vows to tell everyone in town unless she is paid a significant amount of money.

MAXWELL:

Alexandra, what you have done is shameful. When I found you and that man, having sex up and against my bedroom wall, I was caught between hatred and envy. I hated you for doing such an act, such a disrespectful act. The people in town will get wind of this because of Heather. Heather…not sure what you will do, your reputation is at stake…if this gets out, it can be very bad for you…

(sips from his wine)

I also felt envy because I would never have the gaul to take such action. A risk like that, for the sake of passion, is not something I can be so spontaneous about. (beat) I have never loved like that. I have never wanted to take a woman and thrust myself to her in a random environment. Especially with respectable townspeople near by.

…I want you to teach me to love like that and by doing so, I will remove the problem with Heather…
