We’re not rich, ain’t ever gone be rich but that should be good enough for you. And if it ain’t, well then, I guess I’m gonna have to apologize for being a poor provider.
(beat)
You’re my daughter and there’s not a single thing in this world that I wouldn’t do for ya. I’d cut my arm clear off for ya but honey, you need to shape up. You need to shape up….or ship out.
Get yourself a job…WORK! You want things I can’t give you, therefore get off your bum and make it happen. I’ll help you with all that I can darling and if I could I would do it for you. I just can’t afford you that dress.
(she runs out of the house)
Delia?! Delia?!
(beat)
(turns to his wife)
Damn it to hell…Marjorie, (he sighs) I’m gonna go down to Pondi’s Road and talk to Jim McKricket…see if his wife still makes dresses…I know she’s old but, maybe…maybe she’s got one more dress in ‘er.
(beat)
Am I failing as a father? Could I do better? What if I sold my Grandaddy’s watch? I’ll get a pretty penny for that. This way Delia can have her dress for her prom. I know what it means to her.
(beat)
(with growing determination)
We’re going to get her a dress and we are going to get her the most beautiful, most spectacular dress possible. I’m not going to let her down—I can’t.
