Monologue Description: “ONE TIME, ONE NIGHT” is about making a choice between your dreams and your morality.
Character Description: In this monologue, JEDDHA talks to her friend about an offer an older man made to her at her waitressing job. The man wants to pay Jeddha twenty thousand dollars for a one night stand. Jeddha is a struggling singer and could really use this money. She works as a cocktail waitress in an upscale lounge.
JEDDHA:
I was given an offer last night. This older man…he told me he was fifty seven. He’s a handsome man. He offered me twenty thousand dollars to sleep with him one time, one night. Twenty thousand dollars. I think about what I would do with that money. I can have enough money to record my album and release it independently. I know that if I just had some money behind me, I would do well for myself. I would. This man’s offer could really give me a fair shot at getting my music out there.
But the way I was raised…what I believe in, it fights with me and reminds me that I shouldn’t do things like that. That I shouldn’t prostitute myself out there, even though it’s for a good purpose.
Damn, he’s coming back to the lounge tonight. He gave me a few days to think about it. I’m sorry I’m telling you about all this last minute but I’ve really considered doing it and if I did it, I wasn’t going to tell anyone but—
…I don’t think I’m going to do it. I can’t I really thought about it and I started getting these feelings, like these sick to my stomach feelings. And it scared me. I could have only imagined how I would feel if I went through with it. I couldn’t bare it. I don’t think I’m strong enough.
I’m sticking to the brick upon brick motto. One step at a time and one day at a time. As long as I get closer to what matters most to me day by day, I know I will reach my fullest potential and by doing it honestly, I couldn’t ask God for anything more.
Don’t you agree?
