Monologue Description: “TOAST” is a drama about how sometimes lying is a good thing.
Character Description: In this monologue,Arta confesses to his close friend about his run in with an old friend from College.
ARTA:
She wanted to know how I was…I haven’t seen her in over ten years…and, she wanted to know how I’ve been. Hmm.
(to himself)
How have I been?
(he takes a drag from his cig)
Am I supposed to say the truth? Am I? Am I supposed to say that tonight for dinner I ate toast? Four pieces of toast and that I have five dollars in my pocket until Monday night. That I discovered bread now costs three dollars and thirty two cents and that I’m trying to figure out how to make it through the next few days on it.
I found a peanut butter jar in my cabinets. It was a year old. I left it on top of the counter because if I get real hungry, to the point of where I can’t bare it any longer…I’ll use it, as a last resort. I bought milk also. A container of milk. This way I can have some coffee and cereal.
I also found a few containers of tuna fish but guess what? I don’t have a freaking can opener. So what did I do instead? I took a butter knife and jabbed the rim of the can. It took me about fifteen minutes. But I finally cut it open enough to bend the metal back and take out its contents.
How have I been?
(beat)
I told her instead, with a great big smile I might add, that I was doing terrific! That life has been good to me. That I’m successful. Yeah…she believed me. She was happy for me and I was glad she fell for my lies.
(beat)
I was happy for her though. She just recently married…bought a house, has a wonderful career…and plans to have her first child sometime in the next couple of years.
Never thought I’d see that face again. What are the chances?
