Monologue Description: “I KNOW” is a drama about the timing of relationships.

Character Description: In this monologue, Jennifer talks to a man she’s been dating about where their current status of the relationship exists.

JENNIFER:

(answers her telephone)

Hey baby, what’s up?  What did you want to talk to me about?

(beat)

Just tell me…What’s up?  Why do we have to wait until we’re in person?

(beat)

Look in my eyes?  Oh God, what is it?  You have to tell me now cause I’m gonna be tortured for the rest of the day until I see you tonight.  What’s going on?

(pause)

I know.  I know.  We already spoke about this though babe.  Look, I know how it is with us…I know this is, that we, that we’re—I know we have a connection.  It sucks that you have to go back to France but if we’re meant to be, we will be.  I told you I don’t want to get involved. I can’t.  There are many things I need to do in my life, lots of places that I want to go…it isn’t about men.  It’s not.  And I know you know this and I know you feel the same.

I care about you a great deal and I don’t want that to change between us.  I’ve just come out of a three year relationship and it’s only been a couple of months and even though I broke it off with him, I still need time.  I need my freedom.  I do.

This is tough because I know we click.  I didn’t plan on or expect to meet you, Gerard.  I didn’t. Let’s just take it slow.  Let’s just let nature take it’s course and let things happen the way they must.  Please.  I need you to understand this for me and I believe you feel the same way.  Don’t you?  Do you feel that we should take things slow?

I mean, there’s  no reason why we can’t continue to care for one another.  We can’t let geography separate how we feel.  We just need to let things happen the way they must and I know we will be alright.  I know we will.
