Monologue Description: “Reality T.V.” is about some of the consequences that exist “inside” reality television.
Character Description: In this monologue, Jeff talks to his best friend about how he got screwed over by a reality t.v. show.
JEFF:
Can I tell you a secret? This is something you can’t repeat to ANYONE. NO ONE…promise me. You promise? Yeah? Okay, okay.
(pause)
Remember when I did that reality show? Yeah. Remember that episode when Marlon got up in my face and I backed down like a giant wuss? You remember that right? The episode when I looked like a complete bitch? Yeah.
(beat)
What did you think of that? I mean, you must have thought to yourself, “That’s not Jeff! Jeff would knock this guy right out!” Am I right? When you watched that, what crossed your mind?
(beat)
Yeah, you must of thought what everybody else who knows me, thought. ”Jeff is not as tough as we thought”…blah, blah. Right? Or, “I can’t believe Jeff backed down like that?” Blah, blah. Right? Right?
Truth is…I was paid off. That scene in the show was scripted and the producers approached me to make a deal. They offered me money to keep my mouth shut and do the scene. You see, everybody on the show or anybody watching…even if you didn’t know me…probably got the sense that I’m not a guy you want to mess with, at least until that episode—when that scene took place.
So the producers figured that by mixing things up on the show, for example, taking a tough guy and making him a bitch…would improve ratings! So I was approached and pitched the concept. They made it sound so easy, like it was no big deal at all. It would take five minutes to shoot. Marlon would grab me by the shirt, throw me up against the wall and stare me down and I was supposed to get teary eyed and walk away. But I didn’t realize, based on how they actually shot the footage, that I looked like a girl.
I got paid. They took care of me but still, my pride took a hit and now there’s nothing I can do about it. The worst thing in life is to be perceived as someone you’re not!
(beat)
You’re the first and only person I’m going to tell. Do you think I should try and do something about it or just leave well enough alone?
I look like a punk. I can’t believe I did that! I can’t believe I agreed to do that on national television. My manhood, right out the window. I took the money and I ran with it but watching the episode now, looking back on it now, I wish I turned them down.
