Monologue Description: “The Meaning Of Symbols” is a drama about how someone regards meaning in their life.
Character Description: In this monologue, Mickey talks to his stepdaughter about why he wears so much jewelry and has so many tattoos.
(Mickey stares at his stepdaughter a moment and decides to “let her in”)
MICKEY:
…This one here…(points at a tattoo on his shoulder) is of my dog, Rio Grande. It’s his paw. Rio had the smallest paws of any dog I ever seen and he was a Great Dane. But small feet never phased him. I think he was pissed off at doggy heaven and acted in accordance but he was also a gentle soul…very loving animal, he was.
This here, this here is a bracelet I wear on my wrist which reminds me of my baby sister. She’s in her twenties now but I wear it cause she made it for me when she was a kid. She probably doesn’t even remember it, let alone know I wear it but it makes me feel close to her, even though we don’t talk as much anymore…
(beat)
This ring on my pinkie finger? It’s pretty cool, right? See how the blue sapphire sparkles around like that? Yeah, I love that. It was given to me by my old man when I was a teenage boy. Don’t know why he gave it to me at that time but he did. It was my Grandfather’s ring and I wear it proudly. I feel his spirit with me as soon as I put it on.
This other ring I have here…this black ring I wear…is of a special woman I had in my life. An Angel who rescued me from Dark Days and who I will ALWAYS cherish. Yeah, we were together when I bought this…I bought her one too. We were in some random store in the village in Manhattan. Hahaha. Yeah, it makes me remember how special the time we had together was and what we meant to one another. She was a key that gave me back my freedom.
That’s just a few explanations for you dear. The past is the past but it makes us who we are in the here and now and I believe it’s important to remember our journey.
I know I must look to you like a man who wears all sorts of jewelry and crazy tattoos on his body but it’s not just crazy shit. So, yeah…it’s significant to me. I never wear anything on my body, that doesn’t matter. I guess it’s kind of my thing. Keeps me in touch with who I am.
