Monologue Description: “On The Surface” (drama) Under 1 Minute

Character Description: In this monologue, Kara talks to her High School Guidance Counselor about some of the issues she’s been having at home and during school.  Her family as well as her classmates all seem to have a negative opinion about the way Kara expresses her identity.  Kara considers her Guidance Counselor a friend and opens up to her.  

MB TIP: The actress must keep in mind here that there is alot going on underneath this monologue that is not spoken in the text.  The fact is that Kara is greatly affected by how she gets treated and this causes her emotional stress.  She tries to play it off but she hurts within.

KARA:

Why am I different?  What’s different?  I’m not different…I‘m me.  

(beat)

That’s what my Dad keeps asking me…Different?  What is different?  Because I bleach my hair blond or blue or red or pink?  Because I paint my nails different colors?  Because I wear my own style of clothing or whatever?  

Is that it?  Is that why people treat me different?  Is it because they don’t know how to treat me, because they are common?  

(beat)

(she holds back tears)

…I don’t know Mrs. Melandi…I don’t care…I don’t care about being popular or “fitting in” like everyone else does.  I don’t know why I am who I am, I didn’t ask to be here…I just am.  I just do the things I like doing and I don’t care what anybody else thinks.
