Monologue Description: “That’s Charlie” is a drama about knowing your friend’s good side and bad side.
Character Description: In this monologue, Mike describes who he calls his best friend Charlie to another friend who doesn’t know Charlie too well.
MIKE:
He’s crazy if he chooses to be. You can see it in his eyes. He’s not the kind of guy you want to fuck with. I know him really well, one of my best friends. Let me tell you something about Charlie…he’s the kind of guy who is charismatic. A handsome guy with a great smile and a way about him that could charm most ladies. And I’m talking beautiful ladies. Woman want him and men look up to him. But he has a dark side.
Charlie’s worst enemy is himself, it always has been. If he can only get out of his own way, he would be unstoppable.
Charlie, as warm blooded as he is, when his dark side comes out, if you push him to it, he is ruthless. The most ruthless guy I ever came across and I’ve come across tons of bad asses but not like Charlie.
One time I was with him and he received a call about his younger brother who was jumped by a group of guys from the “neighborhood”. Charlie and I drove straight to where his brother was and he was beat up pretty bad, lying on the ground and shit, bloody. Hurt.
I never in all my life saw such anger in anyone’s eyes. I know this sounds like legend here when I say this but I am not the only one to say this about Charlie…his eyes turned BLACK. I know that sounds crazy but his fucking eyes turned BLACK.
There was a group of six guys up the block from where his brother was. They were the guys that beat his brother up. Charlie walked straight up to them and went to work on all of them single-handedly. I was about to jump in and he looked at me and said, “STAY OUT!”.
I watched Charlie beat the shit out of all six guys to the point of where they were hospitalized. He did things during the fight that I won’t even talk about. They fought back and it was like Charlie didn’t feel anything. He took shots to the face, his body and it was like watching a lion fight deer. He overpowered them all. It was after it was all said and done that Charlie walked back to his brother with tears flowing down his cheeks. He picked up his younger brother and carried him out of the park. That was when I realized that what makes Charlie tic is his heart. He lives from his heart and sometimes people don’t get that about him. I do.
If Charlie wanted to be a tough guy and live that kind of life, he could have. There is a power in him that he controls for the right reasons because he is a good human being but I would never cross paths with him, especially if you cross paths with someone he loves. Thank God I am on his side cause I wouldn’t want to be against him.
That’s Charlie.
