Monologue Description: “THE BANGLADESH MAN” is a drama about letting someone you love, know they are loved by you.
Character Description: In this monologue, The Bangladesh Man talks about the love he has for his daughter and how difficult it is for him to tell her the three words….I LOVE YOU.
MB TIP: This character speaks with a slight accent. This is a man who has lost his wife due to cancer. He has been raising his daughter single-handedly for the past few years and his road as a single parent has not been an easy one, to say the least. The key to bringing this monologue to life is the struggle he has within himself to express his feelings to his daughter.
THE BANGLADESH MAN:
I’ve never told my daughter, that I love her. Just, it is not an easy thing to, to say, to someone. I think people, they, say it too easily and for that I don’t understand. I hear people all the time, oh I love you, I love you, on the phone and it, it, it just doesn’t make sense to me.
My dream was to open a Dunkin’ Donuts. When I come to this country I labored many years to save up enough money to finally open my store. I have always loved America and I always admired the business men with their brief cases and suits. Even though I wear an apron, I am a proud American business owner. I am now part of The American Dream…

I, want my daughter to know that I do love her. I try to show but I know I am a difficult man. I’m very stubborn, very hard headed. But I know I try. I, I, I try.

One time it was her sixteenth birthday. It was her sweet sixteen. Yes. And I promised myself that I would—this one time, work up enough nerve to, to tell her. In my country there is no such thing as a sweet sixteen but in America, I want her to feel that she belongs. I had this sweet sixteen party for her. I invited her friends from school, some family and we had this held in a catering hall.
I promised myself that when my daughter walked through the door that ah, that I was going to hug her, kiss her and tell her, by looking into her eyes…I love you.
(as if she were in front of him)
Rajah. I love you Rajah.
I rehearsed this. I rehearsed this in the mirror. All day for weeks I kept saying it in my mind. At work, I even one time told a customer by accident that I loved them. I say, ” Have a good day, I love you”. I almost got beat up. Very large man, very large man indeed but I lucked out. Thank goodness.
(as if a mirror is there at his side)
I love you Rajah. Rajah, I love you. (clears his throat)
I practiced this, spending much time, working up the nerve to do this…
Finally the day come and my daughter, she entered the room, looking as radiant as her mother did on our wedding day. She was so beautiful, I was in awe. All these people who were there that love her…I was overwhelmed with feeling. I walked over to my daughter and I hug her, I kiss her and I look her in her eyes and the words could not come out of my mouth…my daughter she stared at me, waiting, as if she knew I was trying to say something. She knew. She touched my face and she say, I know Daddy, I know…
