“Mad About This…” (drama) 1-2 Minutes

Monologue Description: ”Mad About This…” is a dramatic monologue focusing on the lack of a father figure existing in a household.

Character Description:  In this monologue, Jeremy (the father/husband) talks to his wife about how he wants to be included in all family matters.

JEREMY:

So what if it took me two days to realize I was mad about this?  So what?  I had time to think it over!

(beat)

How can I protect my family if I don’t know what to protect them from?  Answer that for me, please.

You need to discuss these things with me.  I am their father, you are my wife, we are supposed to be a team.  Am I right?  Am I—

(pause.  he listens carefully to what she says)

Look, I don’t know how you want me to respond to that?  How am I—hmmm.  Okay.  You want me to confess my sins, FINE, I’ll confess my sins.

I know I haven’t been there, at times, okay?  Is this what you want?  YEAH!  I KNOW I HAVEN’T BEEN THERE!!!!

(beat)

(he loosens his tie and throws it)

…I know…I wasn’t there for James’ first birthday…I know I wasn’t there for Kimmie’s Graduation…I wasn’t there for when my brother died…I wasn’t there, haven’t been there…for you…

Look, I can’t get into this now.  (sighs)  This is not what I wanted.  I want to be kept on the same level, even though we all know I’m a fuck up.  Hopefully, the day will come when I can be the man you once knew me to be but I know deep down, you already do.  

Look, I don’t know what else to say to you…I am a man of conviction.  A man who lives by what he believes in and that’s part of my sacrifice.  I just never thought out how far my own sacrifices would affect my family.
