Monologue Description: “Multiple Choice” is a drama about coping with family negativity.

Character Description: In this monologue, Dorian gives his niece a word of advice about how not to allow her family to bring her down.

DORIAN:

You stress, you stress, you stress, you stress…when’s it gonna stop. Eh? When? Ya gonna kill yaself one day. Whattya wanna do, wait until ya heart blows up? I see that big vein in ya neck look like it’s about to pop out.

Enough is enough, already. Is it worth it? Do you constantly have to think about all the assholes in your family? They are a bunch a fucking degenerate degenerates. One worse than the other. That’s why ya gotta stay away from them. Seriously.

Look at me…I live out here in the country. I live in a shack, run this barn and take care of the land. That city life just wasn’t for me? I couldn’t take it. Everyday, something else…some new drama to cope with. Just couldn’t tolerate it anymore. Here, nobody bothers me, in fact, the worst thing I ever had to deal with, is the drama on my television set. Now that’s bliss, that’s happiness. Inside yourself you’re a happy person, ya gotta stop lettin’ all them other people bring ya down and make you as miserable as they are. Then, the rest is easy.

I’m not saying go out like I did and abandon yaself…it’s what I needed to do in my life but ya don’t have to be that extreme. Just lighten your load up a bit and see how much of an improvement that is gonna make on ya life.

It’s like multiple choice…make a list and cross off the person who makes you most miserable and watch how fast ya gonna brighten up. Only keep the people in ya life that truly matter, all the rest are just passing time.
