Monologue Description: “Tip Of Your Flame” (drama) about a miserable marriage.

Character Description:  In this monologue, Donald speaks to his wife, Hedda (who listens to music from her headphones) about their relationship.

DONALD:

(his back towards her)

I feel the tip of your flame, woman.  –Anguish.  Faces change through time, don’t they?  Purity turns to mush.  

(he turns to face her)

Purity.  You can sit there and ignore me all day cause I can take it.  I can take it as dark as you can give it.  More.  I hate you.  I do.  I want to hurt you.  I do.  I’m so ashamed of my emotions–although I won’t give birth to my thoughts, they still exist.  Isn’t a thought just as guilty as the act?  If so, I should be locked up and sent away to some foreign land, all alone…all alone where I can be…

Listen to your music, tap your foot, bop your head.  (he nods)  Ignore my heart. What is, is.  What cannot be, will not.

I have this regular vision of taking a knife and carving out my own eye.  You make me so filled with anger that I think it would numb the physical pain of it.  (he laughs)  I wouldn’t feel a thing!  

(beat)

Eh, I don’t feel nothing.  Whatever good I had in me drained out a long time ago.  So many years, Hedda.  Too many years.
