People Never Seem To Want To Engage With Me

Clarissa let’s her boyfriend know that she needs him to be more present during their conversations instead of coming off empty.

Clarissa:  You listen but it’s like you’re not really listening.  You do a lot of head nodding and ‘uh-huh’  but when I ask you a question you ask me to repeat what I said.

I don’t want to feel as though I’m never being heard.  What I talk to you about matters to me and you should take the time to not always be so self-absorbed with your own world.

Don’t fake listen.  Really listen to me cause you make me feel unimportant.  And I don’t need to feel special every second of everyday.  I just don’t like feeling lied to in a conversation, where I’m pouring my heart out about something and your eyes stare back at me vacant.

I don’t need that from you.  I rather not share the things I share with you if you aren’t going to connect with me.

(beat)

It isn’t just with you, though.  I don’t know.  People never seem to want to engage with me.  My friends…family.  Just tune me out.  Am I that boring of a person?  Does my voice annoy people?  What is it?

I have important things to say to, you know.  Maybe not everything that comes out of my mouth is that crazy important but still, you know, I’d like to be heard and responded to.  I don’t think it’s such a terrible request.
