Sugarland
In drama monologue, “Sugarland” Matias explains to Letty how things have been for him since he was released from prison.
MATIAS: It’s alright. You know, it’s just alright, Letty. Like, I mean, I wish sometimes that where I am now wasn’t ’cause of all the bad things I’d done. Like, I never knew how all the little things would add up to… everything.
You know… I’m always thinking back, and everyone says I’ve paid my price, and now that I’m out, I should go back to living again, but it ain’t nothing like that.
Everyone’s turned their back on me. When I was on probation, I made a bunch of calls.
I wanted to catch up with everyone – meet their wives, see their families, or just shoot the sh’t and meet for a pint. No one called back.
But, you know, I like to think straight. I know how to hustle. Since I’ve been released, I got a place, got a job; gettin’ my life back is all I’m focusin’ on.
It’s hard though; I’m not reaching out to anyone this time, but I’m tryin’ to get my Mum to talk to me again. She’s, you know, out of all of ’em, she’s all I really care about. I sent her flowers, but she still ain’t havin’ it. She’s stubborn.
I mean, I didn’t kill anyone or anythin’, but I ain’t – well, yeah, I ain’t no saint. (beat) My sister told me there’s a barbecue next Sunday and that I should go, but, you know, all the drama, I just might, I might let it be…
