Brush of Wind
In serio-comedy monologue, “Brush of Wind” Mullen becomes humble and shares his sincere affection for Lucretia during a moment of honesty.
MULLEN: Lucretia, you left me absolutely no choice in the matter. A beautiful woman such as yourself, leaning in to me as if wishing to be kissed; all I did was take it upon myself to do you the favor – a much-needed favor I might add, as I don’t believe you’ve ever not been in love with me. I believe you do love me.
Before you get yourself in a frenzy and take these words as an offense, I will leave, and I will leave you in peace, as you so wish to be. Before I go, I will admit that I had no intention of making you feel uncomfortable. Perhaps it was forward thinking of me to take hold of you in that way. Perhaps I was wrong in my assessment of the moment, but I believe that deep down, it’s what you most wanted. It is what you’ve always wanted since the moment I laid eyes on you.
Under your facade is a woman who finds me intriguing, a woman who cares for me in ways even I do not understand, but because I am a brute, because I enjoy the drink, the late nights you complain of, and all the days I have abandoned you, you have grown accustomed to hiding your true feelings for me.
Well, I’m here to tell you that it isn’t such a bad notion to roll the dice to see if a match spins out.
I apologize if I have offended you in any way. I still believe what I believe.
I’ll be swimming near the rocks, if you change your mind. I would love, more than ever, to have your company.
