God’s Green Earth

In the dramatic monologue God’s Green Earth, Darby explains to her brother that he needs to stop being shy in order to have a chance at life.

DARBY:  SHYNESS? You shy? I’m your sister; what on God’s green earth are you shy about? (beat) If you can’t talk to me, who in the hell can you talk to then? That’s why you’ve no friends… why Mrs. Hanner is always complaining about you. You don’t socialize. It’s a wonder you get good grades. The only sign of life is that there’s a functioning brain. Use it! Talk to people; make an effort.

…I won’t be around here forever, you know. I can keep tryin’ to get you out of yourself…but sooner or later, you’re gonna need to stand on your own, ‘fore it’s too late. You reach a point in life, Mooney, that if you don’t rise up, they’ll step on you; they’ll push you down. I don’t want that for you. You hear?

Life knocks you down so many times, it gets harder and harder to get back up, and…sometimes, sometimes you can’t…you’ve taken all the hits you can take…which is why I’m saying to you now that if you condition yourself…to fight…well, when life hits you hard, you have a chance to push back against the pain, you have a chance…to survive…just try and survive, Mooney.

Promise me that.
