Oleander
In drama monologue, “Oleander” Harper provides a message for Marla to give to her boyfriend as a token for them parting ways for good.
HARPER: Tell ’em…tell ’em it didn’t have to be this way. Tell ’em I tried. I tried to give him time to fix his bad ways. He refused, he refused to change, and…he hurt me so much I cried like a child.
Tell ’em that in his next life I hope he grows wise and strong, that he’s mighty enough to understand his actions, and that he can forgive himself for all his wrongs. And maybe then he could change. Umm, uhh, tell ’em all that.
An’ tell ’em not to worry ’bout little old me ’cause I’ll be fine ’cause I have a plan all worked out for myself. Tell ’em I’m goin’ to Italy. There’s unusually cheap property in Italy, and I aim to buy one with all the money I’ve saved since we’ve been together. I’ve just enough to buy me a home and live life drinking wine, singing, dancing, and writing…I like to write; I started up this blog thing, and it’s a whole lotta fun, and I see myself wearing dresses, those pretty flower dresses, and goin’ for swims and meeting nice people and tell ’em, tell ’em I won’t ever meet another man; that won’t ever be in the plan, but I’ll think about him every now and again, but only the good parts.
Tell ’em I won’t think about the bad bits ’cause that ain’t right; I don’t wanna ever think about him in a bad way, so…anyway…there it is, I guess. And finally you can – you can tell him I love him, alright, but I’m not sorry, that I can’t ever be sorry, and that’s just the way it has to be.
