Far and Away

In the dramatic teen monologue Far and Away, Eddie tells his mother how his friend Anton has been there for him since his dad died.

EDDIE: Since Dad passed, he’s the only friend that’s really looked out for me. You know, the only one who cares. My other friends… they just keep on living, but Anton, he’s aware; he says things that I know mean something.

It’s like he’s deliberately trying to help without making it obvious. You know, he’ll tell me some story about someone, like this friend he once lost, and things he’s gone through himself—things about his own life——and I could tell he’s communicating this to make me feel better about losing Dad, so there’s this understanding between us without making it obvious.

He knows I can’t talk about what happened, he knows it’s hard, and so we understand each other. It’s like we respect each other’s thoughts, and it makes me feel better to not be alone all the time.

I don’t mind the others; they’re alright, but they lack something. It’s like they can only think so far ahead; their mind don’t go any deeper than that…at least not with me.
