Midst of Summer

In drama monologue, “Midst of Summer” Mama lets her son Cal know she feels threatened by the girlfriend he wishes to marry.

MAMA: Ever since the first day I met her. I knew something wasn’t right with that girl. Sure, you were all smiles and giggles, taken aback by the looks of her. There aren’t many girls that go around with the looks of Flora! Such sweet looks, and in the midst of summer, she had you floored! But the way she smiled – you see, the way she spoke to me – she already had plans, already had her strategy in place! (Mama paces with energy and strength.) I watched as she pulled you further and further away from me, and now this…HA! I already know she’s threatening you to leave me, or else she’ll leave herself. Is that it? I bet that’s it. She’ll do what she wants with you, Cal! I’ve been around. A mother knows these things. And where will you go? What will you do? Gonna leave me alone here to die with Billy? That mule! Is that what I deserve? He’s got no brains, there’s nothing in him! I’m doomed! You’re leaving me, and I’m doomed!
