People’s Lives

In the dramatic monologue People’s Lives, Penelope lets her neighbor Richie know that she doesn’t care to see Calum ever again.

PENELOPE: Don’t know what to do, Richie. I’m not sayin’ anything. But you better tell him I don’t wanna see his face ever again. You keep him away from me, and you keep him away from here.

All he’s ever been to me is trouble, from the day I met him.

I never asked him to get involved in me and Josh’s lives. Our troubles are our troubles, and I coulda swung that hammer on Josh myself. I didn’t need the protection. I don’t ever need the protection from any one of ya!

See these hands? They’re small, but they’ve done damage. I’ve protected myself my whole life. I don’t need him anymore, for anything.

I don’t know what kind of dream he has up in that head of his, that little mad world of his, thinking that life is somehow gonna bring us back together; it won’t! It never will. We’re over.

You tell him that. Tell him to forget us; we’re the past now.
