The Horror of Hubert Holloway
In drama monologue, “The Horror of Hubert Holloway” Hubert explains to Romney that he has deliberately forgotten everyone he has ever known.
HUBERT: Do yourself a favor and walk quietly out the front door. (beat) There are horrors in life that come our way, and if we’re not careful to pay attention to the warning signs, we get eaten. Do you wish to get eaten?
Last night, I was sitting right here in my rocker, and a fuse blew out on the left side of my brain. I had a choice – one choice, one moment to either mend it back or leave it out. I’ve decided to leave it out. To leave it out for good. Which means, quiet. The sounds of no more thoughts about any of you.
I won’t need to leave my house this winter, turn on the tele, or do anything I don’t wish to do. No worries, none at all, but to smoke my pipe, read, and think.
It’s a luxury we’ve been given…TO THINK! A privilege we don’t use as often as we might. A gift. A gift. A real gift we take for granted, allowing our thoughts to get sucked up into meaninglessness, pointlessness, and ludicrousness.
I won’t do it this time. I am finished. Finished with all who vacuum up my clarity, and I refuse a single second more of it.
Deranged. You are all deranged fools who wish to argue over little things, big things, great things, minute things but are yet to MEET TOGETHER on anything!
You can buzz around me if you wish, or go ahead and find yourselves lost in another well you can drink from. But you are out of thoughts now, out of memories, out of my life. To put it finely, you’re dead to me.
