Lights become a spotlight on Heath as he stands beside the hospital bed of his mother.
HEATH: They have you all rigged up, don’t they? (pause.) Well, I’m here… I don’t want to be here, but I’m here; you asked me to be here, and I’m here, alright?Â
This’ll be the final thing you put on me, I guess. (pause.) Not sure what you want me to say. Hmm? What do you want me to say? Want me to say you were a great mother? Will that make you happy, hearing me say those words to you? Is that how all this works?
…Why’d you…
Heath gently takes hold of his mother’s hand.
…Your hand is warmer than mine… (breathes heavily)…I’m holding your hand now, okay? Cause you asked me to…hold your hand, and I’m holding it for you cause you’re still…why’d you do this to me, Mom? Why’d you ask me to be here?
Charlie is the one that could take this head-on. I’m just… I’m just nothing, Mom…this whole thing…ahhh man…you ah… I’m not strong enough for this, Mom. I’m not strong enough to be here right now for this.
Heath steps back from his mother and keeps his eyes on her.
I’m not what you always thought me to be; I’m not worthy..of anything, and I’m not good enough to be here for you like this… I’m not…I don’t know why you chose me, Mom…
Heath takes hold of his mother’s hand again. He bends down and kisses it.
You’re the strong one, aren’t you? You are everything. You’ve…damn it…what am I gonna do now? Where am I supposed to go?
I’m your son. You’re my mother. That’s all I know.
Heath kisses his mother’s forehead as he holds her hand.
