Transitions

In serio-comedy monologue, “Transitions” Orton runs a post-production house and is on the verge of firing his best friend.

ORTON:  We miss out on opportunities because we aren’t aggressive enough. We’re playing it safe, man; we’re taking on just enough work to keep us in survival mode. We don’t take risks that will save us in the end. We’ve become basic, and I don’t want that for my company. We need to fight back, we need originality, we need to be ambitious, we need endurance inside of this mess, and we need a stronger structure, Colby!

Nothing moves around us but time. The projects are getting harder, and I’m getting older. I’m getting tired, and I don’t know if we’re going to walk away from all of this, having accomplished our bigger dreams.

Don’t you get it? We’re not thriving! And all you do is twist and turn, making bitter comments about whatever you’re cutting, and it’s not what we need!

You bring whatever good there is to any project, way, way down. Everyone’s energy lowers when you enter the room.

Justine, on the other hand, she makes me happy, she’s not disturbed mentally, like you. Her energy is light, infectious, it feels good to be around her. It’s like, you know, serene. I need that, Colby. I need serenity. I need to feel RADICALLY OPTIMISTIC for once in my freaking life! Okay? Okay? Yeah? So, let me be.
