Wild Card
In drama monologue, “Wild Card” Gracie tells her sister how she feels about being overlooked and undervalued in comparison.
GRACIE: All my life, I’ve been your big sister. But I’ve always been treated like a no-can-do younger sister. You know why? ‘Cause I like to have fun, and I like to be honest. Fun and honest don’t go together in a serious world.
You were always studious, obedient…listened and followed instructions. I saw the shortcuts. Why do something in eight steps when you can do it in four? But no one rewards shortcuts. You get told that you gotta follow the rules and suffer. Well, I’ve suffered! But, I’m still overlooked, still the no-can-do sister… and there you are, charming the sh’t out of everyone… like some mythical figure that everyone is drawn to – a magnet of charm and good fortune.
While the rest of us must abide by your process. And whoever follows the same rules that you’ve worshipped your whole life; that’s who gets rewarded, not me; it will never ever be me…
