In drama scene from one-act eplay Woman With Wings, Kelton and Liza discover one another at a party and decide to run off together.
Featured Scene – Woman With Wings
LIZA: I’ve been wanting to do that since forever. That fountain would give me nightmares, being chased by the naked lady with wings. Chasing me for ages whenever I came in contact with her.
KELTON: Wait, are you –I’m Kelton.
LIZA: I know who you are. (beat) I am Elizabeth, but I only go by Liza or Lizzy if I really like you.
KELTON: Aren’t you –
LIZA: I am.
KELTON: We are somewhat related, are we not?
LIZA: Good friends of the family, really.
KELTON: That’s right. I haven’t seen you since I was just a child.
LIZA: That’s true. What a mean little b’stard you were.
KELTON: Was I?
LIZA: You chased me with a snake down by the pond.
KELTON: That was YOU?!
LIZA: It was.
KELTON: Good grace!
Liza punches Kelton in the arm.
LIZA (slightly revengeful): There you are.
KELTON (slightly shocked): …I’m sorry.
LIZA: I’m afraid I had Father remove every species of snake from these grounds after that. Had each snake obliterated in one go during a massive bonfire, not far off from here.
KELTON: You did what?
LIZA: Everyone still talks about it.
KELTON: Really?
LIZA: Don’t be stupid. Of course not! You bought that story? I wasn’t even trying.
KELTON: Well –
LIZA: Boy, you’re gullible.
KELTON: Yes, apparently I must be.
LIZA: I am only kidding, Kelton…about you being gullible, not the snakes.
They both laugh.
LIZA: But honestly, something should be done to little evil boys such as you were. Have you grown up some since then?
KELTON: Do you mean am I still chasing girls with snakes?
LIZA: I should hope not.
KELTON: I most certainly am not. I’ve switched to frogs or snails.
Pause.
LIZA: Yes, I am sure you have. (She smiles.)
KELTON (he smiles, capturing Liza’s beauty for the first time)
LIZA: I don’t wish to go back to the party.
KELTON: No?
LIZA: Boring as ever, don’t you think?
KELTON: Well –
LIZA: Oh, be honest Kelton.
KELTON: It’s a bit of a drag, really.
LIZA: I’m going to Monte Carlo, care to come?
KELTON: Monte Carlo?
LIZA: That’s right.
KELTON: When, exactly?
LIZA: Tonight.
KELTON: Isn’t tomorrow the actual wedding?
LIZA: I am the bridesmaid, I should know.
KELTON: You can’t abandon your duty as bridesmaid.
LIZA: They will replace me. I’ve already done all that should be expected of me.
KELTON: Surely the wedding is the main thing.
LIZA: Why is it the main thing, Kelton?
KELTON: It’s a wedding; a wedding is always the main thing, especially for those who are part of the wedding party.
LIZA: Do you always follow the rules given forth to you?
KELTON: I get by quite alright.
LIZA: You need me.
KELTON: I do?
LIZA: Yeah. I think I can use you as well.
KELTON: Use me?
LIZA: We can use each other.
KELTON: How?
LIZA: I already told you, Monte Carlo.
KELTON: And what’s in Monte Carlo?
LIZA: Change.
KELTON: Couldn’t this change wait one more day?
LIZA: No. When it happens, it happens. If I wait one more day, I will burst into fire and ignite the entire wedding; people will die from the flames and smoke asphyxiation. I’m doing everyone an enormous favor by leaving immediately, before it’s too late, and what would we do then? (beat) I’m taking my father’s Bentley tonight. It’s cherry red with a tanned leather interior. It will do us justice while making the drive and figuring this thing out between us.
KELTON: But…this is all so sudden?
Liza and Kelton kiss passionately.
LIZA: Who cares? Live your life.
Liza hands Kelton the car keys.
