Featured Monologue – Landed on Lucky

SAM: CAROL, I swear it forever, I didn’t want to kill Lucky, but I had no choice. It happened. I didn’t wish it to happen, but it did happen. I’m trying to tell ya because it’s been sitting on my chest all this time, and I can’t take the weight of it all. I got enough to carry around.

I really like the way things have been going between us. I can’t feel like I’m deceiving you when we’re together, like I’m hiding something. It makes this whole thing feel incomplete, and I don’t want to have secrets buried in what I think is genuine. I’d rather you know the truth and hate me than love me as a liar.

Pause.

Can I tell you the way it happened? That’s all I ask of you. You can bash me across the face with that rock all you want, but just please let me tell you how it went.

Carol slowly drops the rock to the ground.

It was Carl, Fergie, Ronaldo, and Hooper. We were all up at Hall’s Creek getting high as sh’t, and so the guys thought it’d be clever to hoist me up to some tree with some rope and swing me around like a piñata, each taking violent turns clubbing me with wiffle bats. I was taking a lashing but was jovial about it because I admit it was better than riding any rollercoaster I’ve ever been on.

But then, one of the ropes snapped just as I was swinging upward (motions with his hand) and forward at full momentum, which launched me toward where Lucky was resting. And I bolted, like a missile, and closed my eyes in fear at the thought of crashing into Lucky.

And sure enough, unfortunately and tragically…SADLY, it happened. It’s just so horribly wrong, CAROL. I landed on Lucky, HARD…he yelped, and then we rolled together into Carl’s truck, all tangled and mangled. We ended up at the hospital for three days, and I told Carl, I said, “Carl, you bastard, put Lucky in a box, and I will take him to Carol myself.” And that’s exactly what I did when I came out of the hospital. I wanted to see Lucky buried straight and proper, and that’s what we did, right?

Lucky wasn’t missing, Carol. He was always found, okay? We made up a story for you, to, to mask the truth, and I’m sorry. I’m so sorry I landed on Lucky ’cause he was a mighty fine dog, a good dog, and I’m sorry for everything.
