A Gaze Apart

In the drama monologue, “A Gaze Apart” Colton gives Lacey her own short bio, without ever meeting her before.

COLTON:  You were born and raised in a working-class family. It was rough. Those days weren’t easy on you, but you’re so good at hiding it. Your father was a troubled musician who drowned his troubles in politics and got his head blown off while ordering a bagel inside of a deli. Your mother loved to sing. Her songs lulled you like nature to poetry, you preferred her voice when the booze soothed her throat. The two of you formed a bond, as close as a mother and daughter could be. And as you grew older, your vital signs of talent and the gifts you inherited to play your guitar became evident enough for all to see.

You left home young and came to New York a few years ago. It didn’t take you long to adapt. Sooner or later you found yourself surrounded by crowds, empty ones who left you feeling lonelier than you’d ever been, and from singing at a party, you met and signed with a manager who helped you sign with a label. You recorded your first so-called failed album, which sold a few thousand copies. You recorded your second so-called failed album, which did even worse, and accordingly, you were dropped by both your manager and label.

You’ve been busking on the streets ever since, roaming and looking for a place you can call home. But you don’t have a home, Lacey; you move from place to place. You’re exhausted, angry, bitter, unloved…and what else? You haven’t spoken to your mother in eight months because you’re tired of lying to her about the success you’ve never had, and are now scared to ever have.
