Coat of Thieves

In drama monologue, “Coat of Thieves” Linus must do all that he can to convince his love Gabriella that they are not meant to be.

LINUS:   You are not listening! That is the trouble with you. You do not listen to what I have to say, and we have fallen deeper and deeper down the well, and now we’ve reached its bottom. This isn’t about our love. If it were about love, Gabriella, then our lives would shine like the heavens. Things have changed; our circumstances have changed. My life is different, and there is no going back. It’s impossible. (pause.) I can no longer become the person I was aiming to be for you. Other things have taken over, and at last we are back to our former selves. You must go back to where you are cared for. I am at home here, treading in murky waters…I’m the bacteria that spreads beneath, in the coats of thieves and crooks. I know how they function; I circle around their games. Where I am now is where I am meant to be; where I dwell and find air from, is where I rule. Seeing you reminds me of how much different we both are. How could I have been so ambitious to think I could join the likes of you and your kind? (He chuckles.) Foolish pride! Is that what you want to call it? It’s not about pride, it’s truth! I would never be good enough! I am not going to gain entrance through marriage. When I gain entrance, it will be through other means. Means of which you know not.
