Destination Wrong

In drama monologue, “Destination Wrong” Clara reveals a bit about herself to a man she just met, while drinking wine together at his place.

CLARA: You must think I’m trash; handing me wine in a cup. I come from noble stock. NO-BIL-I-TY. I don’t have to be here; I choose to be here. Don’t get me confused.

I could be out in my garden on a sun-filled day, overlooking a pond, feeding duck. You know, I once saw a duck swimming in a pond having a spiritual awakening. I captured that. I saw the whole damn thing transpire.

Brought grace upon itself. Made me wonder, have I ever had such grace? Where’s my awakening?

Crosby pours more wine into Clara’s cup.

Clara nods like a queen.

I’ve always witnessed such miracles…they just never happen to me. I do get awfully close, but never close enough. I guess seeing something special still counts for something in life..the act of being aware enough to witness such things as that..the duck didn’t pass me by is what I’m saying, I caught it having its moment.

It’s like discovering a Shakespearean sonnet versus writing one. One time I wrote out all of Shakespeare’s sonnets by hand and tried to feel how he may have felt when he wrote them. Do you know what happened? All I felt was doom.

Now I suppose you think you’re gonna shag me, and you’re wrong. I’m not that kind of woman. Not that I don’t find you enchanting, but I can’t be bothered with all of that.

I’m not interested. You hear me? Not interested ONE BIT!

Clara pours herself more wine.

And if you try anything, you will want to kill yourself for doing so. (She nods her head.) I just want a friend for tonight – someone I can talk to who will listen and agree with all that I feel about this world. I need somebody, anybody, to say I’m right about all of it. See it my way for once, so I can rest. (singing in opera style) Free! Free! I want to be FREEEEE! (She giggles.) Do you like my voice?
