Falling Flame
In the dramatic monologue Falling Flame, Caroline tells Lance that he needs to make a change in his life before it’s too late.
CAROLINE: It wasn’t just any audition. I read the script. I looked up the studio. I even read about the filmmaker. He’s made three films in Argentina; all of them screened in theaters out there, and he wrote you a personal note on the side of the script. They specifically wanted you for the role, not Ashton or anyone else, but you.
I didn’t say anything because I was upset that you never mentioned it. Then I thought perhaps you were quiet because of your previous reluctance in discussing your roles, and so I respected that.
All week I watched you go about things like they didn’t matter. This whole time I kept trying to figure you out, to figure out why everything around you has seemed to no longer exist for you.
You think I’m going to be the one who saves you, Lance? I have places to be. I have a life to live elsewhere. What we are to each other is no more than a good night here or there. Let’s be honest with ourselves, we’re standing in two entirely different worlds.
Sooner or later we’ll no longer be a part of each other’s lives; you will move on, and so will I.
But what remains is yourself. You’ve dropped out of your own life, Lance. I’m letting you know now that you can’t rely on me to pick up the pieces for you… I am not the one who will do that.
