In the Shadow of Fire
“In the Shadow of Fire,” Marilyn tells Sheriff Sid that she’s quit her position on account of his irresponsibility to serve the public.
MARILYN: It’s not about burying the mess, Sid! Our county has fallen into ruin! And you’re drowning yourself in pity, never giving enough of a damn to raise your eyes above the glass and notice what’s really going on around you.
Sid motions to speak.
I came onto this job, not for a paycheck. Let’s get that clear. I never cared about the pay one bit. I wanted to be part of something good, something meaningful.
After all I went through, with my family and my divorce, I needed a place I could work in. A place where I could bury my mind and change things for the better. I didn’t care about how I’d survive or where I’d live; I just wanted to be a part of something right and somewhere that needed me.
I believed in you. I looked up to you, Sid. You had class! You had honor! I could see it in your eyes, and everything you promised, I believed in.
Now look where you are; you’ve taken our entire community down with you. We’re losing it all, piece by piece… and its people. Their hopes are fading.
I’ve been resting on who you used to be. That’s my fault, but what I’ve been working with is your ghost, a shadow of your former self. A shadow…and even that has become brittle.
