The Soundless
In drama monologues, “The Soundless” Myson visits the clerk’s window in order to revoke his approval, but is denied.
MYSON: Why can’t you revoke my approval? I don’t want it! I have made a mistake. Surely there is someone I can speak to who can understand that I must return it.
All that I have ever believed in will be taken from me, and I won’t be able to manage it. Do you understand? I thought it would be possible to follow through; I thought it would be possible to reach some clarity, but I cannot; I have made the wrong choice. I was wrong. I was entirely wrong. Don’t people make wrong choices? Haven’t others come before me to revoke? Why can’t I be given this dispensation?
I have the right to choose, don’t I? Why aren’t you responding? (beat) I am telling you that I will not be able to follow through! It goes against everything I am. It goes against what I believe in! I won’t last for long, and I need this decision changed before it’s too late. If you do not change my approval, I will be destroyed.
There is no return; do you follow?! I will be destroyed! I’ve followed your rules, and I’ve waited here in line at the very time I was meant to be here, in line, and you should, by law, take my approval back. I was here! On time!
You must offer my approval to someone else! I reject it; do you hear me? You have made an error, a misjudgment, one I can no longer accept.
