Featured Scene – Sliced Thin

MARCI: Your cousin Jake’s home.

DENNY: …He is?

MARCI: Got in last night, I heard.

DENNY: Thought he wasn’t coming out for another few years.

MARCI: He’s out now.

Marci stares him down.

DENNY: Great. Good for him. (beat) – What?

MARCI: You know what. If I spot you with him even once or hear you’ve been together even once, that’ll be the end of you.

DENNY: It’s my cousin; how am I gonna avoid him?

MARCI: I said no.

DENNY: That’s asking for trouble.

MARCI: I don’t care.

DENNY: He’ll get mad if I don’t see ’em.

MARCI: Let him get mad. He’ll know you’re banned from seeing him.

DENNY: Why you puttin’ pressure on me for?

MARCI: There’s no pressure.

DENNY: He’s gonna think something is up.

MARCI: I don’t care, Denny.

DENNY: Neither do I! But if I don’t see him, he’s gonna think things.

MARCI: What things?

DENNY: That I’m against ’em.

MARCI: Your cousin’s not stupid.

DENNY: But you’re making me look weak.

MARCI: Weak?

DENNY: By avoiding him.

MARCI: Avoid him like fire.

DENNY: He’s family! How am I gonna avoid him?!

MARCI: Denny, this ain’t a game. Wise up, son. Your cousin is back at the docks. You know he’s no good. Being around him is an association, and you can’t afford association. All it takes is one go. You see him; that’s all he needs to get his hooks in ya. One look. You’re around, and you will get involved.

DENNY: He’d do nothing to me.

MARCI: Is that what you think? Jake operates people like chess. You’re just an object to his own bidding. Never loved, never cared for. Nothing more than a pawn. Just a piece on a board according to his play. Jake lives by methods that you know not of. You’re to finish this last year of school, clean, before getting yourself a union job or furthering your education.
