Featured Monologue – Confliction

SHEILA: You know exactly what I mean. I liked you. I cared about you, Chester. I actually believed you to be decent – one of the decent ones – which was refreshing during that time in my life. Drink.

Chester sees his drink and drinks. He begins to calm slowly, regaining his breathing.

I mean, I was so unhappy. I could never make things work with John. Well, I did love him, but things evolve, people change, I changed, he changed, every damned idiot changed around us – and not always for the better, but we remained married because we hoped it would get better. We committed ourselves to believing that the veracity of our love would somehow see us through, that things would improve, but they never did.

I wonder how many miserable marriages there are in the world. But – marriage – that is a word that gets a bad reputation, doesn’t it? If it doesn’t succeed in every shape, frame, or form, the participants are blamed and looked upon as failures. But what about every other kind of relationship, Chester? Parental, fraternal, physical, spiritual. Don’t they all eventually get polluted in one way or another? People are all stuck in misery, hating beneath their breath, going to bed cold, and dishonest.

Well, I’m certainly one of those…but, John is gone. All the light I’ve ever known in my world has gone out, and so..and so..
