EXT. GOVERNOR’S PARK – DAY
ROGER RANDOLPH walks with LESLIE COHENSBURG along the perimeter of Governor’s Park, overlooking the Hudson River.
LESLIE: I’ve always enjoyed writing. It’s always been a passion of mine, really. Graduated Columbia University for English literature. I’ve always been fascinated with the pen more so than the sword.
ROGER: The sword?
LESLIE: Why, yes. I’ve always been more intrigued by the battles won with the written word.
ROGER: Yes, it certainly appears we are going in a more diplomatic way these days, are we not?
LESLIE: Yes, I would agree with you, Mr. Randolph.
ROGER: Please, I would like for you to address me as simply, Roger.
LESLIE: Quick to break formality?
ROGER: I was never one to follow all the rules, just the ones that applied to me. Besides, our reputations precede us, do they not?
LESLIE: Yours, of course, I’m not so sure about mine!
ROGER: The Cohensburgs have done well these past five or so years in the printing press business. I have corresponded personally with your father on more than one occasion.
LESLIE: That I am aware.
ROGER: Are you?
LESLIE: Yes, I remember my father speaking well of you, how you conduct yourself in business affairs. He called you an astute gentleman.
ROGER: Did he?
LESLIE: Yes, he did.
ROGER: That is most kind of him.
LESLIE: My father has always had an ability to spot great promise in people who were meant to do great things.
They exchange looks.
Tell me Roger, what is it in this life you wish to do that is great?
ROGER: …Protect my father’s legacy.
Leslie looks into Roger deeply, trying to get a sense of how to read his statement.
