In drama scene from play script The Dance, Chester and Elsie deepen the path to their relationship by having a moonlit dance on the road.

Featured Scene – The Dance

CHESTER: Why don’t you stop crying?

ELSIE: I can’t.

CHESTER: Yes, you can.

ELSIE: I can’t.

CHESTER: Just turn it off, like a faucet or a switch, just shut it right off.

ELSIE: I was having a good time.

CHESTER: I’m sorry I don’t dance.

ELSIE: You could try.

CHESTER: I’ll only embarrass you.

ELSIE: You could still try.

(pause)

CHESTER: There’s other things I like doing for fun.

ELSIE: I already know that.

CHESTER: Dancing is just-I can’t get into dancing. I don’t move like you can. I don’t know how you move the way that you do.

ELSIE: (shrugs her shoulders)

CHESTER: I wish you’d stop being emotional.

ELSIE: What’s it to you?

CHESTER: I feel like you’re making everything my fault.

ELSIE: Maybe it is.

CHESTER: But I didn’t do anything.

ELSIE: You hover over me.

CHESTER: I what over you?

ELSIE: Hover, you hover over me.

CHESTER: I do?

ELSIE: Always standing over me.

CHESTER: You danced with Tommy all night.

ELSIE: I know I did… I don’t need you to tell me what I did and what I didn’t do, I have my own intelligent mind to recall my memories with.

CHESTER: I’m trying to comprehend how I was hovering over you when you were dancing on the other side of the ballroom. I never interfered.

ELSIE: You didn’t have to, the way—I can’t explain it, your presence was interfering. I felt you watching me dance the entire time. Didn’t matter how far I was, your eyes were on me.

CHESTER: …Yeah…

ELSIE: Creepy.

CHESTER: Creepy?

ELSIE: Yeah.

CHESTER: I’m creepy?

ELSIE: Yeah.

CHESTER: You saying I’m creepy makes me feel creepy.

ELSIE: Why didn’t you go gamble or do something in the other room?

CHESTER: I don’t like to gamble.

ELSIE: Why not talk to some other woman?

CHESTER: Talk about what exactly?

ELSIE: FLIRT! Tease or get teased—it’s healthy—make me jealous for once.

CHESTER: You wouldn’t mind that?

ELSIE: Perhaps.

CHESTER: What if you found me locking lips with some other woman…what then?

ELSIE: Oh gosh, the thought of it – it’d be hysterical.

CHESTER: Really?

Elsie giggles wildly.

ELSIE: You’d look ridiculous kissing some random girl while your eyes are still on me. Ha, ha, ha, that would be hilarious.

CHESTER: It would?

ELSIE: Seeing you break open, or at least making the attempt. I’d give money to see that.

CHESTER: You are demented.
