MARTIN: Anyway, we’ve — we’ve suffered enough. It’s most likely that we are going our separate ways. We had a major blowout a few weeks ago, and I had a sleepless night. I drank a lot, which isn’t like me at all, but I drank quite a bit and still went to work. I didn’t have any surgeries that day; I would have re-assigned or re-scheduled them regardless.

However, there was an incident that occurred that, that I can’t get my head around, something I’m quite ashamed of, and it has made me question myself, that perhaps I’m not as good a person as I believed myself to be.

…There was a man, a dying man, under my care. It was about two thirty in the morning, and his hour of passing had come. I spoke with his son on the phone; his son was overseas and therefore couldn’t make it to the hospital in time. Needless to say, this young man asked if I could relate a message to his father.

I hung up the phone, I had every intention of giving this message, but when I got into the room, a coldness came over me. I wanted to get things over with, I lost all sense of care or concern… I wanted this man to die gently and without delay, so I could get on with my own problems.

Within fifteen minutes, he had passed. I never gave him the words his son cried to me. It was too late.

When I got home, I went to bed, and since waking up, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.
